Ralph Houk, who died Wednesday at 90, inadvertently caused the cancellation of the Yankees' 1958 pennant-clinching party. On the team flight after the game, a few Yankees were celebrating rather heartily, perhaps none more so than relief star Ryne Duren, who was pounding cigars into Yankee faces when he came upon Houk, the former third-string catcher turned coach under Casey Stengel. Duren exuberantly smashed a cigar into Houk's mug. And Houk exuberantly smashed his left hand into Duren's mug, knocking the reliever flat onto his can. And the incident hit some particularly exuberant headlines back in New York, prodding co-owner...

BEACON-NEWSThe Kane County Cougars plan to hold a full Catholic mass before their game tonight -- right on the field, with an altar set up near the center field wall. Fourteen churches will take part in the service. It's a first for the minor league baseball team, which went with a mass because the team official who came up with the idea is Catholic but is open to other religious services, too, perhaps one a month. "First thing, we'll pray for no rain -- then a victory," General Manager Jeff Sedivy said.photo taken on July 12, 1997, Kane County Cougars...

LOS ANGELES -- The list grew by one of the people tired of hearing Frank and Jamie McCourt bicker. The addition? The judge presiding over their divorce. The Los Angeles Dodgers could be ordered sold if the McCourts do not resolve payments, including property taxes and attorney's fees, according to the Los Angeles Times. Each McCourt continues to complain of low liquidity, and L.A. Superior Court Commissioner Scott Gordon thought of one way to resolve their cash flow issue -- putting a for sale sign at Chavez Ravine, the newspaper said. "The parties are unintentionally pushing the court toward an...

Everyone knew George Steinbrenner III as The Boss, the bullying and bombastic owner of the New York Yankees, famous for firings and feuds, with a temper so legendary that it was parodied on TV's Seinfeld. But many in his adopted hometown of Tampa saw his other side — the compulsively generous, big-hearted billionaire who leaves behind a decades-long legacy of quiet philanthropy to children. Steinbrenner, 80, died Tuesday morning after suffering a massive heart attack at his Tampa home that was preceded by a long period of declining health.

A rare Stephen Strasburg baseball card is hitting the auction block againStephen Strasburg’s rare autographed 2010 Bowman Prospects rookie card goes on the auction block with a starting bid of $9,000. The anonymous owner tried to sell the card on eBay in June, but that auction ended when outrageous bids exceeding $900,000 could not be verified. The owner pulled it from eBay and re-listed it -- only to see it reach a ridiculous $500,000 quickly. It was pulled again. Bidding begins Wednesday at noon, and lasts for two weeks. Pulled from a pack of Bowman Trading Cards, Beckett Grading Service...

Should be a fun game. I know people say the game doesn't matter. But with the National League losing so many in a row, I think the meaning is back with the fans. It is fun. Go NL !

Perhaps his health wasn't quite the best since he relinquished control, though it kind of figured that he might deny it---as indeed he did, challenging "anyone" to come down his way and try even a portion of the workouts through which he claimed to put himself. >But it almost figured it might take a "massive" heart attack to send George Steinbrenner to his reward over a week after he celebrated his eightieth birthday. Short of a SWAT team Steinbrenner seemed indestructible, even when acknowledging his mortality in perhaps the only way he knew: surrendering minute-to-minute control of the Yankees (does...
